In November, 1916 THE MILITARY MINISTRY OF GERMANY established technical committee for armour vehicles' creating and manufacturing. Engineer Jeseph Foulman directed the engineering works. The first prototype was ready in the spring of 1917 and got the name: Sturmpanzerwagen A7V (A7V was the abbreviation from «the seventh (transport) department of General Management of Military Ministry». German: "Abteilung 7, Verkehrswesen"). Tank's base was a massive square frame. The engine department was in the centre, the commander and driver's cabin was above it. There was a hanger bracket made due to the principle of tractor «Holt» under the frame. Armoured sheet was attached to the frame with rivets. The armament included cannon and machine-guns.
